Meeting clarifies the intentions of the Group João Santos

January 12th, 2006 - The Local Union of Maranhão obtained through the State Deputy Soliney Silva, a meeting with representatives of the Industrial Group João Santos to talk about the problems related to the dismissals at Itapagé and Agrimex.

In this meeting, the representatives of the group João Santos were: Arthur Pacheco, Director of Human Resources of the Group, Gustavo Enrique Caldas from the company Itajubá (company of the sugar sector of the Group), Mauro Renato Pillar lawyer of the Group, Raimundo Jairo, Fábio Vidal, Geraldo Magela, Genival Pereira and Alexsander Baptist.

Representing the Government of the State besides the member of the house of representatives Soliney Silva, the secretary of State of the Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Maranhão, Mr. Ronaldo Braga. Representing the workers, there were the leaders of the Local Union of Maranhão, Mariano Crateús, Francisco Duroteu, Francisco Xavier Barbosa, Manoel Benedito Duarte and Luiz Carlos Plácido.

In this meeting the representatives of the company who until then opposed to give explanations had confirmed the complete stoppage of the activities in the Agrimex and Itapagé for a minimum period of two years for the reorganization of the machines aiming to extend the company capacity from 72.000 ton/year to an annual capacity of 144.000 ton.

Still, according to the representatives of the company this adjust was necessary to extend the competitiveness of the companies, however no guarantee was given to the workers, and worse no alternative to prevent the economic chaos in Coelho Neto.

All the city will be affected since about 80% of the lands of the city belong to the Industrial Group João Santos and, moreover, smaller companies, autonomous workers and the commerce are directly connected to the companies Itapagé and Agrimex, the closing of these plants means the destruction of the local economy.
